Nutrients vs Ingredients

Where Other Diets Fall Short

Other industry diets meet the nutrient profiles needed to address a disease state but do so using poor-quality ingredients like meat meals, corn, and a lengthy list of synthetic nutrients.

We know that when an animal is sick, nutrition matters most and that you can provide a therapeutic metabolic diet with whole foods.

Veterinary Developed

No Meat Meals

medicus icons _Developed by veterinarians & nutritionists-

Veterinary-Formulated Nutrition

Developed by a veterinarian using whole-food ingredients and nutritional science to support specific physiological functions through purposeful nutrition.

ingredient1

No Rendered Meat Meals

Rendering converts animal carcasses into ingredients for animal feed. They are ground, heavily cooked, pressed to remove fats, ground again, and then dried. Included in this process are bones, organs, blood, feathers, and slaughter floor waste. Meal is a heavily-processed ingredient before it’s added as an ingredient to kibbles.

100% Real, Whole Foods

No High-Heat Cooking

askfjbcvsdkzjnvcjkx nzdkvnkzjvdkjszjvkdjsznvksdnks,mz

Real, Whole-Food Nutrition

Made from real, whole-food ingredients rather than rendered meals or heavily processed powders. Whole foods provide nutrients the body can efficiently digest, absorb, and utilize.

  No High-Heat Processing

Conventional kibble is produced using multiple heating steps, including extrusion and drying, which can expose ingredients to temperatures exceeding 400°F. These high temperatures are necessary for shelf stability and safety, but they can alter the structure of certain heat-sensitive nutrients and naturally occurring compounds found in whole foods. Medicus diets are freeze-dried instead. This low-temperature process removes moisture without exposing ingredients to high heat, helping preserve the nutritional integrity, digestibility, and bioavailability of whole-food ingredients.

Freeze-Dried

No Corn

Freeze-Dried to Preserve Nutrients

Freeze-drying removes moisture while preserving the original nutrient profile and digestibility of whole foods without high-heat processing.

corn

No Corn or Corn Fillers

Our formulas do not include corn or corn-derived ingredients. Instead, we use whole-food carbohydrate sources selected for their digestibility and nutritional contribution to the overall formulation.

Carefully Selected Whole-Animal Meats

No Antibiotics

Ingredient-Icons_Raw-Beef.png

Clean, Digestible Animal Proteins

Uses digestible animal proteins that provide essential amino acids to support muscle maintenance, skin integrity, immune function, and metabolic health.

Chicken

No Added Hormones or Routine Antibiotics

Because we source meats from trusted partners who follow responsible animal-raising practices, no antibiotics, hormones, or other medications are administered to the animals prior to slaughter. This helps preserve the integrity of the ingredients used in our formulas.

Locally Sourced Ingredients

No Artificial Preservatives

Responsibly Sourced

Trusted Ingredient Sourcing

Responsibly sourced from trusted suppliers who prioritize ingredient quality and safety. This sourcing approach allows us to select ingredients such as organically grown produce, wild-caught fish, and pasture-raised beef.

Ingredient Icons_Mixed Tocopherols

Naturally Preserved

We only use mixed tocopherols, a natural preservative, in all Medicus Diets. While it functions as a way to keep each bag of food shelf-stable and fresh, it is also an antioxidant.

Limited Ingredient

No Artificial Flavoring

Focused Ingredient Formulation

Limited ingredient formulations help support digestibility and allow more precise nutritional formulation for sensitive systems.

No Artificial Flavor Additives

Because all of our ingredients are freeze-dried, the original flavor remains, making it similar to a fresh or home-cooked diet in taste.

Organic Produce

No Artificial Dyes

Ingredient Icons_Cranberries

Prioritizes Organically Grown Produce

Consumption of pesticides can increase oxidative stress and place unnecessary strain on the body. When available, we prioritize organically grown produce in our formulas. This means ingredients are grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, supporting cleaner, more natural nutrition from the ground up.

No Artificial Colors

Artificial dyes are used in pet foods to add color to brown kibble in an attempt to give them a more desirable and aesthetically pleasing color.

3rd-Party Tested

No Byproducts

medicus icons _cGMP facility-

Third-Party Tested for Safety and Accuracy

Each Medicus diet went through complete comprehensive 3rd party testing. Several rounds of AAFCO Nutrient Profile testing ensured that both macro and micronutrient levels are tending to your pet’s specific nutritional needs.

Oat Flour

No Byproduct Ingredients

Byproducts are the result of whole foods being broken down into smaller parts, like peas being broken down into pea protein, pea flour, pea fiber, and pea starch. This allows pet food companies to list these as separate ingredients on their ingredient decks.

Minimally Processed

Antioxidant-Rich

No Rendered Fats

Blueberries

Whole-Food Antioxidant Nutrtion

Each Medicus formula contains naturally occurring antioxidants such as polyphenols from blueberries, carotenoids from spinach, and astaxanthin from krill. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.

No Brewers Rice

Ingredient Icons_Krill

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Nutrition

Omega-3 fatty acids support normal immune function, cardiovascular health, skin integrity, and renal physiology. Medicus formulas are uniquely formulated to provide an approximate 1:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio using whole-food sources, a balance that differs significantly from conventional pet foods.

Ingredient-Icons_White-Rice.png

Whole Rice Only

Many kibble diets contain brewers rice, a fragmented byproduct of white rice processing. We use whole white rice selected for digestibility and nutritional contribution.

Independently Reviewed

No Wheat

Independently Evaluated Formulations

Each formulation undergoes independent review to verify ingredient safety, nutrient balance, and formulation integrity.

Wheat-Free Formulation

Wheat is commonly used as a filler for commercial kibble companies, as it is inexpensive and easily accessible. Wheat is used as a plant-based protein and isn’t as digestible or bioavailable for carnivores.

Feeding Guide

Always consult your veterinarian before introducing this diet to your cat. Start with these daily feeding guidelines and follow your veterinarian’s suggestions about the number of meals per day and whether the daily recommendation is right for your cat.

REHYDRATION RECOMMENDED

Nugget Rehydration Directions:

Rehydrate by adding +/-  ¾ cup of warm water for every cup of food. Mix the water and food, and wait 3-4 minutes, then serve.

Palatability Suggestions

Consult with your veterinarian before following these suggestions. Every cat and their condition is different, so it is best to learn whether the recommendations are right for your cat.

Chicken Bone Broth

Hydrate your cat’s food with chicken bone broth (no sodium) as a nutritious and enticing way to add moisture and flavor. It is low in calories and fat so the nutritional makeup of the Medicus Diet will not be altered.

Nutritional Yeast

Sprinkle nutritional yeast over your cat’s food or mix in. It is low-glycemic and contains the mineral chromium, which can help to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Kefir

Hydrate your cat’s food with kefir, which contains probiotics, beneficial enzymes, and vitamins B & K. It is also a great source of calcium.

FAQs

Store freeze-dried food like you would any of your dry goods. Keep them in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight for peak freshness.

It is important to note that because these foods are freeze-dried, moisture can affect the shelf life. To prevent that, reseal the product properly after every use by pushing out all residual air. If you live in a hot, humid environment, the product may be exposed to more moisture and shorten shelf life, so follow the above and store it in the fridge.

We recommend keeping the food in its original packaging since that bag was picked specifically to keep oxygen out. Our recipes are only packaged in individual, resealable bags to ensure the freshest food. And if you order more than 16 oz, you’ll get multiple individually packaged bags, so you only have to open one at a time.

All of our diets are freeze-dried and undergo a pasteurization process that eliminates any bacteria to be safe and shelf-stable for immunocompromised pets. The freeze-drying process is not only a safe and effective pasteurization process but also retains 97% of food’s original vitamins and minerals, meaning these diets are undeniably as close to fresh, whole foods as possible.

It is extremely recommended that you add some kind of moisture to your pet’s meal, whether that be from warm water, bone broth, or kefir. Moisture aids overall digestion and helps move any harmful substances out of the body. It is also essential for pets with kidney or bladder problems, as it replenishes fluid lost during increased urination and flushes bacteria out of the bladder.

If there is remaining food left in your pet’s bowl, you can transfer it to an air-tight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to five days.

We use locally-sourced ingredients for the freshest and highest-quality possible. All of our grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, and organic produce are grocery-grade from trusted food suppliers.

All Medicus Diets for dogs are packaged in 32 oz. bags and all Medicus Diets for cats are packaged in 16 oz. bags. This is to maintain peak freshness to preserve the quality and nutrients of the whole food ingredients. We also use mixed tocopherols, which is a natural preservative, in every diet to keep it shelf-stable and also provide additional antioxidants.

We recommend looking at our palatability enticers for each diet on their respective page, as they are catered to each aspect of health that the diet is centered around.

Following our transitioning guide can also help pets gradually adapt to their new food before fully feeding Medicus.

Medicus Therapeutic Diets consist of both Complete & Balanced Diets and those for Supplemental Feeding only.

Each Medicus diet went through complete comprehensive 3rd party testing. Several rounds of AAFCO Nutrient Profile testing ensured that both macro and micronutrient levels are tending to your pet’s specific nutritional needs.

Some nuggets may be harder due to differences in diet composition. Recipes that include rice, for example, tend to be slightly firmer. Additionally, variations in texture can occur during the freeze-drying process based on the fat content in the meats used—since freeze-drying concentrates fats, this can influence the final consistency.

Because of their unique diet composition, these nuggets will not rehydrate in the same way as other freeze-dried products. You can expect them to retain a crunchier texture even after adding water.

Our freeze-dried paté is a great alternative! Its consistency can be easily adjusted with water to suit your pet’s preferences. You can also mix nuggets into the paté for added texture and variety, which can help prevent boredom or palate fatigue.

Good so far
Ive been introducing this food to my cat, little by little. So far he seems to like it and it hasn’t affected his health negatively. He’s a special needs cat and doesn’t do well with diet changes. I do feel it’s super expensive.

This food shows promise for my fatty cat
Finally, a weight loss of 3.5 oz for my diabetic fatty boy! That is reason to rejoice, after trying for over 3 months without any loss on other foods. I feel the Metabolic diet is very healthy for any cat, and hope to transition my other two (with diabetes and FIV) to it eventually. Having a starving cat on a diet hastens that transition. :-))

My cats loved this food! But it is expensive ☹️
I am looking for a replacement for the prescription food that I fed all of my cats because of 1 with diabetes. I mixed the prescription food with 2 lower carb foods and fed all 4 cats with that mix. Now my cat with diabetes has passed away so looking to revise for the remaining 3 who are healthy (although chonky). My cats loved this food but it would cost more than the Rx food. I'm looking for lesser expense.

High quality effective food for cats
The vet had prescribed Hills Metabolic food for my male 14 year old cat who was 20 lbs; he gobbled and begged for this food which initially I thought was a good thing. He gained 3 pounds in a very short period of time, he could never get enough of the Hills metabolic dry food and began having loose bowl, excessive coughing, and vomiting up the food as he was binge eating. I took him off the food and provided a couple other non-metabolic dry foods while I researched what to do as the vet said either the Hills or the Royal Canin and both had the negative effects on him, so that was it. I accidentally discovered the Metabolic by Medicus and it has been life changing for my cat. and me. He initially balked, but slowly I have increased the proportion to 75 Medicus Metabolic to 25 another dry food, NOT the Hills Metabolic. The Hills and RC Metabolic food I will no longer buy If he is hungry at the end of the night I only put 1/8 c of the metabolic out and it's always gone in the morning. He is no longer coughing/vomiting, he has lost 2 pounds in 2 months, no loose bowel and he overall feels better. I am forever thankful to Mediucus. Especially as they have a metabolic dry food that doesn't require a vet prescription or the vet pressure to buy it from them. Also, I have learned that for me it is better to spend my money on a high quality healthy safe ingredient food than vet bills, hours lost sitting waiting at the vet and prescriptions. Thank you Medicus!

great food, but cats refused it after 3 days
This is wonderful food, but after 3 days the cats just turned their noses up to it. I think this is something the cats will eat if given 2-3 times a week for one meal, but not everyday.

New food, not a big hit
My cat is not crazy about the food. I have been introducing it to her slowly, in small amounts. She picks around her new food. I soak it in warm water and then mix it in with her canned food. Would appreciate suggestions for her.
