How It Works

The Medicus Canine Senior Diet is meticulously crafted to address these key nutritional needs:

Helps Maintain Muscle Mass and Strength

  • As dogs age, maintaining muscle becomes harder. This diet provides highly digestible animal protein to help support muscle maintenance and overall strength.

  • Whole-food protein sources provide essential amino acids in a form that aging dogs can efficiently use.

Preserve Lean Muscle & Vitality

  • Wholesome cuts of meats from healthy USDA Inspected animals being used for human consumption. Meeting the same standards as human meat production:
  • No antibiotic use prior to slaughter
  • A healthy animal
    • No chemical or medicines administered prior to slaughter
    • Humanely Slaughtered
    • Processed according to USDA Standards
    • Stored according to USDA standards

Provides Healthy Fats for Energy and Brain Function

  • Healthy fats provide a concentrated, efficient source of energy that aging dogs can utilize well.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids help support normal brain function and overall cellular health.

Fuel Brain & Cellular Health

  • Healthy fats – Omega 3 Fatty Acids from ground krill

Supports Healthy Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

  • Digestive efficiency often declines with age. Highly digestible ingredients help aging dogs absorb more nutrition from their food.

  • Prebiotic fiber helps support beneficial gut bacteria and digestive balance.

Ease Digestive Burden

  • As dogs age, digestion becomes less efficient. Functional greens and gentle fibers promote better digestion, absorption, and microbiome balance.

Provides Antioxidants to Support Healthy Aging

  • Antioxidants from whole foods help protect cells from everyday oxidative stress.

  • These nutrients help support overall health and vitality as dogs age.

Defend Against Cellular Aging

  • Antioxidant-rich superfoods like blueberries, spinach, and pomegranate help counter oxidative stress and support immune function.

Nutrients vs Ingredients

The Right Nutrients. From the Right Sources.

As dogs age, their physiology changes. Metabolism slows, nutrient absorption becomes less efficient, and maintaining muscle and energy requires more thoughtful nutrition.

Senior diets must deliver precise levels of protein, fats, and essential nutrients in forms the body can readily digest and utilize.

While many diets achieve these targets through highly processed ingredients or isolated nutrient additions, Medicus takes a whole-food approach. Our senior diet is formulated with real, functional ingredients selected for both their nutrient composition and digestibility.

This allows us to deliver purposeful nutrition that aligns with the body’s changing needs — using ingredients that provide meaningful nourishment, not just numbers on a label.

Proof in the Numbers

Why We Show the Comparison

As dogs age, nutrient levels matter. Protein, fat, and key vitamins and minerals must fall within specific ranges to support healthy aging and nutrient utilization.

Because of that, we believe transparency matters.

Below, you’ll see how the Medicus Senior Support Diet compares nutritionally to other widely used senior diets. Our recipes deliver the targeted nutrient levels expected from senior nutrition — while being built from whole-food ingredients.

The goal isn’t to compete on numbers.

It’s to show that precise nutrient formulation and real food can exist together. And for many dogs, that difference is reflected in sustained energy, steady appetite, and continued vitality.

Veterinary Developed

No Meat Meals

medicus icons _Developed by veterinarians & nutritionists-

Veterinary-Formulated Nutrition

Developed by a veterinarian using whole-food ingredients and nutritional science to support specific physiological functions through purposeful nutrition.

ingredient1

No Rendered Meat Meals

Rendering converts animal carcasses into ingredients for animal feed. They are ground, heavily cooked, pressed to remove fats, ground again, and then dried. Included in this process are bones, organs, blood, feathers, and slaughter floor waste. Meal is a heavily-processed ingredient before it’s added as an ingredient to kibbles.

100% Real, Whole Foods

No High-Heat Cooking

Real, Whole-Food Nutrition

Made from real, whole-food ingredients rather than rendered meals or heavily processed powders. Whole foods provide nutrients the body can efficiently digest, absorb, and utilize.

  No High-Heat Processing

Conventional kibble is produced using multiple heating steps, including extrusion and drying, which can expose ingredients to temperatures exceeding 400°F. These high temperatures are necessary for shelf stability and safety, but they can alter the structure of certain heat-sensitive nutrients and naturally occurring compounds found in whole foods. Medicus diets are freeze-dried instead. This low-temperature process removes moisture without exposing ingredients to high heat, helping preserve the nutritional integrity, digestibility, and bioavailability of whole-food ingredients.

Freeze-Dried

No Corn

Freeze-Dried to Preserve Nutrients

Freeze-drying removes moisture while preserving the original nutrient profile and digestibility of whole foods without high-heat processing.

corn

No Corn or Corn Fillers

Our formulas do not include corn or corn-derived ingredients. Instead, we use whole-food carbohydrate sources selected for their digestibility and nutritional contribution to the overall formulation.

Carefully Selected Whole-Animal Meats

No Antibiotics

Chicken

No Added Hormones or Routine Antibiotics

Because we source meats from trusted partners who follow responsible animal-raising practices, no antibiotics, hormones, or other medications are administered to the animals prior to slaughter. This helps preserve the integrity of the ingredients used in our formulas.

Locally Sourced Ingredients

No Artificial Preservatives

Responsibly Sourced

Trusted Ingredient Sourcing

Responsibly sourced from trusted suppliers who prioritize ingredient quality and safety. This sourcing approach allows us to select ingredients such as organically grown produce, wild-caught fish, and pasture-raised beef.

Ingredient Icons_Mixed Tocopherols

Naturally Preserved

We only use mixed tocopherols, a natural preservative, in all Medicus Diets. While it functions as a way to keep each bag of food shelf-stable and fresh, it is also an antioxidant.

Limited Ingredient

No Artificial Flavoring

Focused Ingredient Formulation

Limited ingredient formulations help support digestibility and allow more precise nutritional formulation for sensitive systems.

No Artificial Flavor Additives

Because all of our ingredients are freeze-dried, the original flavor remains, making it similar to a fresh or home-cooked diet in taste.

Organic Produce

No Artificial Dyes

Ingredient Icons_Cranberries

Prioritizes Organically Grown Produce

Consumption of pesticides can increase oxidative stress and place unnecessary strain on the body. When available, we prioritize organically grown produce in our formulas. This means ingredients are grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, supporting cleaner, more natural nutrition from the ground up.

No Artificial Colors

Artificial dyes are used in pet foods to add color to brown kibble in an attempt to give them a more desirable and aesthetically pleasing color.

3rd-Party Tested

No Byproducts

medicus icons _cGMP facility-

Third-Party Tested for Safety and Accuracy

Each Medicus diet went through complete comprehensive 3rd party testing. Several rounds of AAFCO Nutrient Profile testing ensured that both macro and micronutrient levels are tending to your pet’s specific nutritional needs.

Oat Flour

No Byproduct Ingredients

Byproducts are the result of whole foods being broken down into smaller parts, like peas being broken down into pea protein, pea flour, pea fiber, and pea starch. This allows pet food companies to list these as separate ingredients on their ingredient decks.

Minimally Processed

No Cellulose

Whole-Food Antioxidant Nutrtion

Each Medicus formula contains naturally occurring antioxidants such as polyphenols from blueberries, carotenoids from spinach, and astaxanthin from krill. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.

Medicus formulas are uniquely formulated to provide an approximate 1:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio using whole-food sources, a balance that differs significantly from conventional pet foods.

Ingredient-Icons_White-Rice.png

Whole Rice Only

Many kibble diets contain brewers rice, a fragmented byproduct of white rice processing. We use whole white rice selected for digestibility and nutritional contribution.

Independently Reviewed

No Wheat

How to Feed

Feeding Guide

Use these guidelines as a starting point and adjust based on your pet’s individual needs and response. Medicus Targeted Diets are designed to provide focused nutritional support as part of a thoughtful, individualized feeding approach. Always provide access to fresh water.

REHYDRATION RECOMMENDED

Nugget Rehydration Directions:

Rehydrate by adding +/-  ¾ cup of warm water for every cup of food. Mix the water and food, and wait 3-4 minutes, then serve.

Paté Rehydration Directions:

Add 1 1/2 cups of hot water (120 degrees F) for every 1 cup of Medicus paté powder. Mix and let rest for 5-10 minutes. Prior to serving, add two additional tablespoons of warm water and mix.

Palatability Suggestions

Consult with your veterinarian before following these suggestions. Every dog and their condition is different, so it is best to learn whether the recommendations are right for your dog.

Chicken Bone Broth

Hydrate your dog’s food with chicken bone broth (no sodium) as a nutritious and enticing way to add moisture and flavor. Bone broth sits well in dog’s stomach so it is perfect for dogs with upset stomach and decreased appetite.

Plain Yogurt

Mix in plain yogurt with your dog’s food. The beneficial bacteria will colonize in the gut & reduce the amount of harmful bacteria that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and upset stomach.

Plain Canned Pumpkin

Place a small amount of canned pumpkin in or around your dog’s bowl. Pumpkin contains soluble fiber that can be beneficial for dogs experiencing diarrhea by firming up loose stool.
