Nutrients vs Ingredients

The Right Nutrients. From the Right Sources.

Kidney support diets are built around precise nutrient levels. Many rely on heavily processed ingredients and isolated nutrients to reach those numbers.

The Medicus Kidney Support Diet is built differently. Each recipe uses whole foods that naturally provide the nutrients cats need, while still delivering the controlled nutritional profile required for kidney-conscious feeding.

Because nutrients don’t exist in isolation. They come from food. And food is what nourishes the body.

Proof in the Numbers

Why We Show the Comparison

When cats require kidney-conscious nutrition, nutrient levels matter. Protein, phosphorus, sodium, and other key minerals must fall within specific ranges.

Because of that, we believe it’s important to be transparent.

Below, you’ll see how the Medicus Kidney Support Diet compares nutritionally to other widely used kidney support diets. We share this so you can see clearly that our recipes deliver the targeted nutrient levels expected from kidney support nutrition — while being built from whole-food ingredients.

The goal isn’t to compete on numbers.

It’s to show that precise nutrient control and real food can exist together.

And for many cats, that difference matters in ways you can see — steady appetite, consistent energy, and a willingness to eat their meals.

ingredient1

No Rendered Meat Meals

Rendering converts animal carcasses into ingredients for animal feed. They are ground, heavily cooked, pressed to remove fats, ground again, and then dried. Included in this process are bones, organs, blood, feathers, and slaughter floor waste. Meal is a heavily-processed ingredient before it’s added as an ingredient to kibbles.

100% Real, Whole Foods

No High-Heat Cooking

askfjbcvsdkzjnvcjkx nzdkvnkzjvdkjszjvkdjsznvksdnks,mz

Real, Whole-Food Nutrition

Made from real, whole-food ingredients rather than rendered meals or heavily processed powders. Whole foods provide nutrients the body can efficiently digest, absorb, and utilize.

  No High-Heat Processing

Conventional kibble is produced using multiple heating steps, including extrusion and drying, which can expose ingredients to temperatures exceeding 400°F. These high temperatures are necessary for shelf stability and safety, but they can alter the structure of certain heat-sensitive nutrients and naturally occurring compounds found in whole foods. Medicus diets are freeze-dried instead. This low-temperature process removes moisture without exposing ingredients to high heat, helping preserve the nutritional integrity, digestibility, and bioavailability of whole-food ingredients.

Freeze-Dried

No Corn

Freeze-Dried to Preserve Nutrients

Freeze-drying removes moisture while preserving the original nutrient profile and digestibility of whole foods without high-heat processing.

corn

No Corn or Corn Fillers

Our formulas do not include corn or corn-derived ingredients. Instead, we use whole-food carbohydrate sources selected for their digestibility and nutritional contribution to the overall formulation.

Carefully Selected Whole-Animal Meats

No Antibiotics

Clean, Digestible Animal Proteins

Uses digestible animal proteins that provide essential amino acids to support muscle maintenance, skin integrity, immune function, and metabolic health.

Chicken

No Added Hormones or Routine Antibiotics

Because we source meats from trusted partners who follow responsible animal-raising practices, no antibiotics, hormones, or other medications are administered to the animals prior to slaughter. This helps preserve the integrity of the ingredients used in our formulas.

Locally Sourced Ingredients

No Artificial Preservatives

Responsibly Sourced

Trusted Ingredient Sourcing

Responsibly sourced from trusted suppliers who prioritize ingredient quality and safety. This sourcing approach allows us to select ingredients such as organically grown produce, wild-caught fish, and pasture-raised beef.

Ingredient Icons_Mixed Tocopherols

Naturally Preserved

We only use mixed tocopherols, a natural preservative, in all Medicus Diets. While it functions as a way to keep each bag of food shelf-stable and fresh, it is also an antioxidant.

Limited Ingredient

No Artificial Flavoring

Focused Ingredient Formulation

Limited ingredient formulations help support digestibility and allow more precise nutritional formulation for sensitive systems.

No Artificial Flavor Additives

Because all of our ingredients are freeze-dried, the original flavor remains, making it similar to a fresh or home-cooked diet in taste.

Organic Produce

No Artificial Dyes

Ingredient Icons_Cranberries

Prioritizes Organically Grown Produce

Consumption of pesticides can increase oxidative stress and place unnecessary strain on the body. When available, we prioritize organically grown produce in our formulas. This means ingredients are grown without synthetic pesticides or herbicides, supporting cleaner, more natural nutrition from the ground up.

No Artificial Colors

Artificial dyes are used in pet foods to add color to brown kibble in an attempt to give them a more desirable and aesthetically pleasing color.

3rd-Party Tested

No Byproducts

Each Medicus diet went through complete comprehensive 3rd party testing. Several rounds of AAFCO Nutrient Profile testing ensured that both macro and micronutrient levels are tending to your pet’s specific nutritional needs.

Oat Flour

No Byproduct Ingredients

Byproducts are the result of whole foods being broken down into smaller parts, like peas being broken down into pea protein, pea flour, pea fiber, and pea starch. This allows pet food companies to list these as separate ingredients on their ingredient decks.

Medicus formulas are uniquely formulated to provide an approximate 1:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio using whole-food sources, a balance that differs significantly from conventional pet foods.

Ingredient-Icons_White-Rice.png

Whole Rice Only

Many kibble diets contain brewers rice, a fragmented byproduct of white rice processing. We use whole white rice selected for digestibility and nutritional contribution.

Supplemental Feeding

The Medicus Feline Kidney Support diet is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only and should be used as directed by your veterinarian.

Nutritional Facts

How to Feed

Feeding Guide

Use only as directed by your veterinarian. Medicus Veterinary Diets provide intentional nutritional support for pets with more complex needs. Feeding amounts and duration should be adjusted based on your pet’s response. Always provide access to fresh water.

REHYDRATION RECOMMENDED

Water is essential for supporting normal kidney function. Adequate hydration helps maintain healthy blood flow and fluid balance, allowing the kidneys to perform their natural role in filtering the blood and eliminating metabolic waste through normal urinary processes. Supporting hydration is an important part of maintaining overall renal health.

Nugget Rehydration Directions:

Rehydrate by adding +/-  ¾ cup of warm water for every cup of food. Mix the water and food, and wait 3-4 minutes, then serve.

Paté Rehydration Directions:

Add 1 1/2 cups of hot water (120 degrees F) for every 1 cup of Medicus paté powder. Mix and let rest for 5 minutes. Prior to serving, add two additional tablespoons of warm water and mix.

Palatability Suggestions

Consult with your veterinarian before following these suggestions. Every cat and their condition is different, so it is best to learn whether the recommendations are right for your cat.

Chicken Bone Broth

Hydrate your cat’s food with chicken bone broth (no sodium) as a nutritious and enticing way to add moisture and flavor. It is low in calories and fat so the nutritional makeup of the Medicus Diet will not be altered.

Sardines

Place a sardine on top of your cat’s meal. They are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, which have been shown to slow the decline of kidney function associated with kidney conditions.

Kefir

Hydrate your cat’s food with kefir, which contains probiotics, beneficial enzymes, and vitamins B & K. It is also a great source of calcium.

FAQs

This recipe is formulated specifically for cats who need kidney-conscious nutrition and controlled mineral levels. Because these dietary needs are typically identified and monitored by a veterinarian, we require authorization to ensure the diet is used appropriately as part of a vet-guided care plan.

This diet is formulated for cats with kidney or renal concerns, or for those whose veterinarian has recommended a kidney-support or low-phosphorus diet. Because it is designed for targeted nutritional use, it is not intended for healthy maintenance feeding unless directed by your veterinarian.

Cats with kidney concerns often benefit from carefully managed phosphorus intake. We use thoughtfully selected ingredients and whole-food mineral sources to help maintain balanced phosphorus levels while still delivering nutrient-dense nutrition appropriate for a kidney-conscious feeding plan.

Rice is included very intentionally. While we typically formulate meat-forward recipes for healthy cats, kidney-support nutrition has different priorities. Rice provides a gentle, highly digestible source of energy with naturally low phosphorus, helping maintain a controlled mineral balance while supporting steady calorie intake and easy digestion.

Yes — we strongly recommend rehydrating this recipe before serving. Adding warm water increases moisture intake, which supports normal digestion, circulation, and overall fluid balance throughout the body. For cats on a kidney-support diet, consistent hydration is an important part of a thoughtful feeding routine, and rehydration also enhances aroma and palatability.

We intentionally offer the Kidney Support Diet in both nuggets and freeze-dried paté to help support cats who may be more selective at mealtime. The paté is designed to be mixed with warm water so you can adjust the texture and moisture level to suit your cat’s preferences. You can also mix rehydrated nuggets into the paté for added texture and variety. Serving the food fully rehydrated and slightly warm enhances aroma and palatability and can help encourage more consistent intake while maintaining the diet’s carefully designed nutritional profile.

This diet is formulated for targeted nutritional support and should be used under the guidance of your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can advise whether it is appropriate as a long-term feeding strategy based on your cat’s individual needs.

This food has reversed my kitty's kidney levels. The bladder diet is just as good. The ingredients are nourishing for a sick kitty-non of that disgusting canned rubbish. EXCELLENT customer service too. I mix with gravy to give it more flavor and she gobbles it down.

my 17yo cat loves this food
My finicky 17yo cat loves this food. My vet gave me a sample pack recently to try because my cat has developed some decrease in his kidney function. The dry food pieces are hard and large but if you read the directions on the package it does say to soak them in a little water. I soak in a small amount of warm about 3-4 pieces at a time then I cut them into half or smaller pieces and place it on top of his wet food. My cat is also on a special diet for inflammatory bowel and constipation issues. He is not a fan of his wet food but when I mix this Medicus kidney support food with his wet food he devours it all. So My cat gives it a 5 star review and we will continue to use it.

Quality product.
I ordered both the pate and kibble. I like that you hydrate the food as it keeps it fresh and you can adjust the consistency to get more liquid in their diet. It will take some time to get my cats switched over but I’m loving the products so far. Time will tell.
